Memorial Cup | Knights secure finals berth

(Saginaw) Easton Cowan scored the game-winning goal late in the third period to help the London Knights book their spot in Sunday’s Memorial Cup final with a 4-2 win over the Saginaw Spirit , Wednesday.


Cowan took Sam O’Reilly’s pass and beat Andrew Oke glove side with 1:25 left in regulation. Cowan then confirmed his team’s victory with an empty-net goal with 22 seconds remaining.

In the semi-final on Friday, the Spirit will play against the Western Hockey League champions, the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Kasper Halttunen and Denver Barkey each had a goal and an assist for the Knights, while Michael Simpson stopped 26 shots.

Alex Christopoulos and Joey Willis scored for the Spirit. Oke blocked 31 pucks.

The two teams were 2-0 to start this game and faced each other for the first time since the Western Conference final of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). The Knights won the series in six games, going on to win top honors in the OHL.

Christopoulos opened the scoring at 8:50 of the first period, deflecting Bloom’s shot.
