During this Easter weekend, from Saturday March 30 to Sunday March 31, adults can receive baptism. A phenomenon on the rise in France.
Very early in the morning of Sunday March 31, a few dozen people joined the Argentan church (Orne) for a special celebration. At 46, Sandrine had dreamed of it for a long time while Pierre-Émile met God more recently. Four adults were baptized on Easter night, an unprecedented number for this Norman church. Pierre-Émile claims to have found comfort in his faith.
Young people in search of spirituality
This year, 7,135 adults will be baptized in France, a figure that has been steadily increasing for 10 years. The motivations of believers are multiple. Many, like Sandrine, talk about confronting illness or death. But they all emphasize the need to belong to a community. “I have always waited for this moment in fact, to make communion, my baptism”, enthuses Sandrine. Among the newly baptized, many adolescents and very young adults. The sign, perhaps, of a generation in search of spirituality in the face of the ecological crisis and the return of war to Europe.
