Mme Simon had sparked controversy when she was appointed in July 2021, because she did not speak this language.

On her first visit to Quebec City on Wednesday, she was greeted by Mr. Legault, who said he spoke with her in French and English.

In a press scrum on Thursday, he said it’s surely not ideal that the head of state doesn’t speak the country’s second official language.

He reported that she told him that she was taking private lessons and that she was able to speak a few sentences.

Remember that the CAQ advocated the abolition of the office of lieutenant governor, the representative of Mme Simon in Quebec, but according to Mr. Legault, it is not a priority for Quebecers.
