Friday April 19, the 13 Heures heads to India where an endangered species of camel can swim up to 3 km per day.

Nicknamed the “desert ships, majestic camels thrive in the arid lands of Asia, in the far west of India, in the estuary of the Arabian Sea. A unique breed in the world, sea camels are capable of swimming several kilometers every day. “We love these camels as much as our own children”says Hamir Jaat Bachau, a sea camel breeder since his childhood.

A threatened species

This species of camel is now endangered. Its habitat is threatened by climate change. The salt industry, which is developing in the region, is also eating into its land. The population has halved in ten years and today, there are only 4,500 sea camels left in the region. A disaster for breeders, because the sale of these animals represents their only income. In India, all species of camelids present in the country are threatened by the disappearance of their habitat.
