(Toronto) Savannah Harmon had three goals and two assists to lead Team King to a 5-3 win over Team Kloss in Thursday’s LPHF three-on-three game heading into the tournament NHL All-Stars.
Ella Shelton and Kendall Coyne Schofield also scored in the victory.
Ann-Renée Desbiens made eight saves in the first half of the game, while Aerin Frankel stopped five shots in the second period.
The match consisted of two 10-minute periods, with players from all six LPHF teams. The team names represented those of the league’s advisory board members, Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss.
Alex Carpenter, Jocelyne Larocque and Brianne Jenner scored the goals for Team Kloss. Emerance Maschmeyer blocked six pucks in the first half of the game and Nicole Hensley also stopped six during the following period.
LPHF Special Advisor Cassie Campbell-Pascall was behind the Team King bench with Tessa Virtue, two-time Olympic gold medalist in figure skating, as star coach.
New Jersey Devils Director of Player Development Meghan Duggan was behind the bench for Team Kloss. She had WNBA star Jonquel Jones by her side.
Shelton scored the first goal of the game 59 seconds into the game. She fired a backhand shot after receiving a pass at center ice from Harmon.
Carpenter then took advantage of Desbiens’ failed clearing attempt to tie the game a little over a minute later.
Larocque made it 2-1 for Team Kloss at 4:26 of the first period. Larocque beat Desbiens with a shot over the left shoulder.
Harmon brought the two teams back into a tie with 20.6 seconds remaining in the first period. This completed the play of Marie-Philip Poulin, who passed the disc to her through traffic.
Harmon scored his second goal of the game at 3:05 in the second period.
She completed her hat trick 35 seconds later, on a pass from Coyne Schofield. Her teammates threw their gloves onto the ice to celebrate the moment.
Coyne Schofield gave his team a three-goal lead at 6:45 in the second period. She redirected a pass from Harmon, which came from the right circle.
Jenner scored on a slap shot with 1:06 remaining, when Team Kloss pulled Hensley in favor of an extra player. Laura Stacey passed the puck to Jenner, who hit the target.
