Meeting Friday | Legault will ask Trudeau for full powers in immigration

(Quebec) Prime Minister François Legault will ask his federal counterpart Justin Trudeau on Friday for the repatriation to Quebec of all immigration powers.

This is what he said Thursday in response to a question from PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon.

The two prime ministers are meeting Friday in Montreal at the request of Mr. Legault, to discuss the situation in immigration that he considers worrying.

As of December 31, Quebec welcomed 160,651 asylum seekers, which represents 55.6% of the total in the country and which puts a lot of pressure on the delivery of services.

Mr. Legault suggested that if the federal government refused to transfer all immigration powers to him, he was already evaluating his other options.

The demand for full immigration powers for Quebec has been part of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) program since 2015, but the party has never succeeded in winning its case.
