Growing Up Tall: Embracing Uniqueness

While Olivier Rioux, recognized as the tallest teenager globally and a player for the University of Florida Gators, has learned to embrace his height, Jérémy Gohier’s parents have taken a different approach. Geneviève Brosseau and Félix Gohier worked diligently to ensure their son felt just like any other child, fostering a sense of normalcy in his life.

From his earliest days, Jérémy stood out among his family and peers. His parents realized he was destined to be exceptionally tall when he was just three months old. Despite facing judgment from others—like when he wore a diaper at the age of two and towered nearly four feet tall—Geneviève remained unfazed by societal pressures. Jérémy, with his upbeat spirit, has always engaged in life like any other child, proudly showcasing his height.

There was a moment of concern for Geneviève when Jérémy, at nine years old and 5 feet 7 inches tall, returned home from school with dirty pants. “He had worn them out at the knees,” she shares. “When I asked his teacher, she explained that he was playing on his knees with friends to interact better.” This was the only time she worried about how he would feel about being so tall, given that the average boy his age stood at 4 feet 3 inches.

Fortunately, Jérémy didn’t experience bullying during his formative years. He has always had a strong group of friends who treat him as if he were much shorter. His height certainly gives him an edge in basketball, and during a visit from the Toronto Raptors last fall, he confidently strolled through the Bell Centre, radiating pride.

“In our family, we see him as just a regular boy,” Geneviève affirms. “He’s a cheerful teenager, full of energy, and occasionally a bit goofy. We find comfort in knowing he doesn’t complain about his height, although he often jokes that he doesn’t want to surpass eight feet.”

The Genetics Behind Jérémy’s Height

So, what contributes to Jérémy’s extraordinary height? His parents are of average height—his father at 6 feet and his mother at 5 feet 7 inches. However, Jérémy’s maternal lineage features several tall relatives, including his grandfather, who stood at 6 feet 5 inches, with others approaching the 7-foot mark.

According to endocrinologist Céline Huot, height is influenced by more than just genetics alone. Geneviève humorously adds that she “didn’t add anything special to his bottle” to encourage rapid growth. “I breastfed him for two months, and then he switched to the purple Bon Départ formula,” she chuckles.

She recalls how doctors closely monitored his development at four years old, searching for signs of early puberty. “There was nothing unusual. He had a typical childhood and is now navigating through adolescence—albeit at a greater height than most. He’s yet to grow facial hair, but puberty is on the horizon.”

“We have ruled out gigantism,” she concludes, sharing insights from Jérémy’s ongoing medical evaluations. In her heart, Geneviève knows the journey to understanding her son’s remarkable height is still unfolding.
