In the Médoc, lakes are real treasures of biodiversity, with exceptional flora and fauna. For several years, they have been the subject of major work.

Located between the Gironde estuary and the Arcachon basin, the lake of Carcans-Hourtin (Gironde) constitutes, with the lake of Lacanaua major tourist attraction for the Médoc. It is surrounded and fed by wetlands, more than 11,000 hectares are essential to its operation. The Médoc lakes association, in partnership with Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the Gironde department and the water agency Adour Garonneundertook, for several years, to restore these typical areas of the territory medoc.

The marshes are reception areas for migratory birds, in particular the common cranes. They are also reservoirs for different species of fish, which use them as breeding grounds. This work is an important ecological issue, it is one of the solutions for adapting to climate change. More than 1,000 hectares have already been reconnected.
