The Mediterranean Sea is in the grip of a phenomenon of warming of its waters. This warmer temperature is accompanied by the arrival of fish accustomed to warmer seas.

Since the beginning of summer 2022, the waters of the Mediterranean Sea have warmed greatly. On average, the temperature is 5°C higher high than in other summer seasons. This phenomenon is caused by the successive heat waves that are raging in France. “She is super good, she is very hot. It’s truly pleasent”says a swimmer. If this temperature delights holidaymakers and divers, the warming of the water also allows many species of fish to be seen, although they are usually not very visible in the Mediterranean Sea.

The quantity of fish that frequent Mediterranean waters is increasing sharply. Many come for cooler seas, but others are drawn to the warm waters. Barracudas, for example, usually swim in the waters of the Red Sea. “They are present in an abnormal amount, I would say. There are really a lot more than usual (…) In the long term, I think it will have environmental consequences”describe Michael Youssouf, diving instructor. The fears of scientists relate to a change of ecosystem in the waters of the big blue.
