From now on, the sale of medications individually will be compulsory in pharmacies in certain cases. Explanations.

Shortages of commonly used antibiotics are already being felt. These high-pressure medications will soon be sold individually by pharmacists, with the exact number of tablets and no longer in boxes. “I think it will be more efficient. There will be less waste and mess at home”, says a woman. Every day, a pharmacy’s trash can is full of medications brought back by patients. The French throw away 1.5 kg each year.

Traceability problem

In this pharmacy, only psychotropic drugs and certain painkillers are sold individually. However, the pharmacist does not wish to extend this single unit sale to other antibiotics, too complicated according to him. “There is traceability which is very important. We have had notions in the past where we had batch problems, and there we lose all safety for the patient. So doing it is possible, but “It requires quite a lot of work.” says Yorick Berger, general secretary of the Paris pharmacists’ union.
