“The channels of communication remain open.” Efforts to achieve a truce in the Gaza Strip “continue”Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said on Tuesday, September 17.

The Gulf country, which is acting as a mediator alongside the United States and Egypt, has been trying for months to secure a ceasefire agreement, coupled with the release of Israeli hostages held in the Gaza Strip in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. But the talks appear to be at an impasse, with Israel and Hamas accusing each other of blocking them.

After the failure of the last rounds of talks in Doha and Cairo, the United States said it was working on a new compromise proposal, without giving details. The US State Department announced that Secretary of State Antony Blinken would visit Egypt this week to discuss efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza. The Qatari representative declined on Tuesday to specify whether a new proposal had been sent to Israel or Hamas.
