“Due to mechanical problems, the Rosemont aquatic complex is temporarily closed. We thank you for your understanding, ”indicates the City in a notice published on its website in the last few hours.

At the office of Mayor Valérie Plante, it is confirmed that a mechanical problem has occurred, forcing the closure of the premises. “The teams are already working with the contractor to settle this quickly”, specifies the press officer, Alicia Dufour, on this subject.

According to our information, it would be a problem of temperature which would affect in particular the swimming pool. The water, which would have dropped by several degrees, would simply be too cold to welcome citizens in a setting deemed safe. In the best of scenarios, the management of the Center hopes to be able to reopen its doors during the next week.

A long-awaited project

At the end of June, the head of sports and recreation on the executive committee, Caroline Bourgeois, and the mayor of Rosemont – La-Petite-Patrie, François Limoges, officially launched the activities of this highly anticipated new aquatic complex. It is that since the closure of the Rosemont swimming pool in 2019, then that of Père-Marquette last year, the Saint-Denis basin was the only indoor swimming pool in the borough.

Construction of the Rosemont Aquatic Complex began at the end of 2019, but the project was first mentioned in 2016. The new three-storey building, an investment of $39.3 million, was erected on the vacant lot adjacent to the former Rosemont swimming pool, between 8e and 9e Avenue, near rue Bellechasse.

This closure is in addition to a series of other problems that have arisen with the Aquatic Centre. Scheduled for 2020 and then fall 2021, delivery of the project was delayed due to the resumption of the tender contract, which had been deemed non-compliant by the Office of Inspector General (OIG).

The COVID-19 pandemic and other related factors — including supply issues — have also pushed back its final delivery.
