Measles kills Ontario child, first in more than 10 years

Ontario Public Health announced that a young child has died after being hospitalized with measles — the first such death in more than a decade.

A document released Thursday said the child was under five years old and was not immune to the virus.

The document shows that no other measles-related deaths were recorded in the province between 1er January 2013 and this week.

Public health says there have been 22 confirmed cases of measles in Ontario this year, including 13 in children.

It indicates that 12 of the children were not vaccinated against measles and that the others had unknown vaccination status.

Five of the children, including the one who died, had to be hospitalized.
