Daniel Ricciardo and the McLaren team will part ways at the end of the current Formula 1 season. McLaren and the driver have negotiated the takeover of the Australian’s contract last season.
Ricciardo held an option clause for his seat at McLaren in 2023, but his performances over the last 35 races have been disappointing. Although he gave McLaren its first victory since 2012 last September at Monza, Ricciardo has generally been overshadowed by team-mate Lando Norris.
Aged 33, Ricciardo has only one podium and 19 points this season. Norris also only made the podium once, but he scored 76 points.
McLaren would have paid US$15 million to buy out this option clause from Ricciardo.
Oscar Piastri, the Australian F2 champion, has reportedly been signed to replace his compatriot at McLaren, but no official announcement has been made.
One of the most popular drivers on the circuit, Ricciardo is in his 12e season in F1. He has won eight career races.
