McGill University’s only French-language newspaper, The offensethreatened with extinction, will continue publication after winning more than 65% of votes in a referendum held earlier this week.
No less than 67.7% of the undergraduate student community voted to keep the French-language newspaper. “We are honored to be able to continue to serve the interests of the student population,” the Daily Publications Society, the student organization that publishes the newspaper, announced on Friday.
For the past few days, the student association had to make the decision to continue funding the newspaper, which is published in print and online.
” The [seul] McGill French student newspaper, The offense, may have to close its doors after 45 years of existence. Whether you are at McGill or not, you can help us by voting or spreading the news,” Rafael Miro, journalism student and contributor to the weekly wrote on Twitter on Monday.
The result of the referendum thus allows the Offense to maintain funding. Each semester, students donate $6 to the Daily Publications Society, which brings together student newspapers McGill Daily and The offense.
