McGill calls for police intervention to dismantle pro-Palestine encampment

McGill University has requested the intervention of police forces to dismantle a Palestine encampment that has grown on its grounds in recent days.

After first urging students from several Montreal universities, who set up some 80 tents on this site, to collect their belongings and leave the premises, the university moved to another stage, she confirmed Tuesday in an email sent to the media. “Yesterday, at the end of the afternoon, noting the absence of a resolution, the university management took the decision to undertake the last step included in its protocol, and requested the intervention of the police forces ”, says the email.

Already, on Monday, tension had risen a notch in this camp, which receives the support of several professors from McGill University. In particular, wooden planks had been installed in front of the entrance giving access to the tents installed on the grounds of the establishment.

As soon as this camp was erected, the university was in contact with the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) in anticipation of its dismantling. A situation that was criticized on Monday at Duty professors from McGill, saying they saw this as an infringement on the freedom of expression of university students.

“The police service understands the values ​​that McGill advocates as an educational institution and is well aware of its commitment to preserving freedom of expression and assembly within the limits provided by law and by the policies that she decreed. The safety and well-being of our entire student population and staff are our main concerns,” argues McGill University.
