Mbemba and Veretout in the game, Guendouzi and Rongier miss out… The ratings of Marseille players against Tottenham

Olympique de Marseille will not experience a European winter. The goal scored by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at the very end of the match, Tuesday November 1, during Tottenham’s victory against OM at the Stade Vélodrome (2-1), ended Marseille’s European season. However, the Olympians had given themselves the means to fulfill their ambitions at the start of the match, with brilliant Chancel Mbemba and Jordan Veretout. Other players missed out, such as captain Valentin Rongier or midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi.

Paul Lopez: 5.5/10

The Spanish goalkeeper has nothing to be ashamed of on the goals of Clément Lenglet (54th) and Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg (90 + 4th). Before that, he had frustrated Harry Kane by taking out the shot from the Englishman (45 + 7th) and preventing him from taking the ball alone in front of goal (49th). Saved by his cross on a first strike from Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg (81st), he made a small error on a cross from Emerson (63rd), without consequence.

Chancel Mbemba: 7/10

Another big game from Mbemba. The Congolese defender made a huge tackle on Harry Kane (81st) but also, as usual, brought offensively. He placed a huge blow with his helmet to open the scoring on a corner (45th + 2). His loss of the ball could have cost OM a goal (63rd).

Eric Bailly: not rated

Out after eight short minutes of play, replaced by Samuel Gigot (6/10), who was directly in the right tempo against Harry Kane. A header from a corner, well off the Tottenham goals (62nd). Unusual enough to point out, Gigot was himself replaced by Sead Kolasinac (73rd)who misses the qualifying ball on a header that misses (87th).

Leonardo Balerdi: 6/10

A solid game from the Argentinian. Sharp in his interventions, Balerdi was also important in the first recovery, with several good balls to break the lines. Warned a quarter of an hour from the end for a bad gesture (76th).

Jonathan Clauss: 5/10

The French international is really struggling to chain physically. Released at half-time against Strasbourg last weekend, Clauss seemed borrowed despite good initiatives and a lot of activity on his right side. He should have centered back (5th) and missed his recovery (21st). Replaced by Issa Kabore (73rd).

Valentin Rongier: 4/10

Marking on Lenglet on the Spurs goal (54th), the Marseille captain can blame himself for having been completely eaten by the French defender on this action. In difficulty, Rongier was unable to compensate for his uninspired offensive activity. Replaced by Luis Suárez (83rd).

Jordan Veretout: 6.5/10

A big match from the Frenchman, who has been gaining momentum in recent weeks. Like OM’s first half, Veretout was everywhere. In particular with the decisive pass for Mbemba (45th + 2) and on a strike perfectly released by Lloris (33rd). Replaced by Cengiz Under (73rd)who attempted a low-risk curling strike (75th).

Nuno Tavares: 5/10

He tried to sound the revolt after the Spurs equalizer in the second period, but without success. As usual, very determined on his left side, but too much waste.

Matteo Guendouzi: 4/10

Placed once again in support of Alexis Sanchez, he struggled to exist offensively between the lines. He provoked the free kick, avoidable, which led to Tottenham’s goal and lost the ball at the very end of the match which eliminated OM from all European competition this season.

Amine Harit: 5/10

As often this season in the Champions League, the light came from his feet. But he ultimately failed to be decisive. A good cross (3rd) and a pure shot just above the goals of Lloris, which shook the Vélodrome (59th). Insufficient balance sheet.

Alexis Sanchez: 5/10

His absence in the first leg was felt. This time present, the Chilean weighed but lacked success in front of goal. A header wide (3rd), a shot well out by Lloris (19th) and another counter in extremis (83rd). Frustrating.
