The episode of rain and storms that hit the Alpes-Maritimes on Monday was brief but intense. David Lisnard, the city’s mayor, denounced a lack of anticipation.

After the flood, the controversy? Heavy rains caused flooding on Monday, September 23, in the Alpes-Maritimes, a department placed inn yellow alert for “storms” and “rain-flooding”. “There is a problem with modeling, there is a problem with alerts. It seems to me that the techniques should allow us to have better information upstream,” lamented the LR mayor of Cannes, David Lisnard. The elected official asked the prefect to analyze what went wrong to prevent the situation from happening again.

At midday, Météo-France recalled that its yellow alert had been issued “Sunday at 6 o’clock” and that this alert level concerns phenomena which “can be occasionally and locally intense/dangerous”. Moreover, its vigilance bulletin published at 6 a.m. warned against “violent but short-lived storms” accompanied “heavy rain”. In fact, “heavy rains” have hit the city center of Cannes “from 7:20 to 7:50”with “accumulations over the entire episode of around 30 to 40 mm over the city”.
