Mayor attacked in Avignon: the political class reacts – (franceinfo)
André Mondange, mayor of Péage-de-Roussillon (Isère) says he was the victim of a racist attack in Avignon on the night of Thursday to Friday. The political class is outraged.
Politicians are warning of the increase in this type of aggression: “It is a crisis of authority and there is a need to strengthen public authority, we cannot continue like this”, says an elected official. According to him, people “defying public authority” should be subject to much heavier sanctions. The president of the association of mayors of France, for his part, denounced yet another attack.
“Unsustainable” far-right violence
Laurent Wauquiez, president of the Auvergne-Rhônes-Alpes region, provided support to the councilor’s family in a press release: “The objection of the remarks and the cowardice of the individuals must remind us that the extremes remain a threat to which justice must remedy without fail”. On social networks, many denounce unbearable far-right violence: “the conviction must be up to par!”posted Fabien Roussel, national secretary of the Communist Party on the social network X. According to a Cevipof survey, attacks against mayors have increased by 15%.
