Born on October 5, 1980, in the United States, Ti West, screenwriter, director and editor, runs on nostalgia. Thus, in The House of the Devil And The Inkeepersit strives to recreate the style and atmosphere of horror films from the 1970s and 1980s, while in In a Valley of Violencehe revisits the spaghetti western. Shortly before the filming of X In New Zealand, the filmmaker asks Mia Goth if she wants to extend her stay there in order to film there PearlNot only did she agree to play the lead role, but the actress became the co-writer and one of the executive producers.

Born on October 25, 1993, in England, to a Canadian father and a Brazilian mother, the former model Mia Goth made her big screen debut in 2013 in Nymphomaniac (Lars von Trier). With her carnivorous smile, her incandescent gaze and her cries of terror, this atypical beauty soon distinguished herself in genre cinema, notably in A Cure for Life (Gore Verbinski), Suspiria (Luca Guadagnino) and Infinity Pool (Brandon Cronenberg). With X And Pearlwhere she borrows the accent of the southern United States, Mia Goth confirms her status as queen of horror. Soon, we will see her in Blade (still without director) and Frankenstein (Guillermo del Toro).

Inspired by the slashers Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and John Carpenter (Halloween), Ti West transports the viewer to 1979 in the depths of Texas, although X was filmed in New Zealand, where a crew of amateurs are preparing to shoot a porn film, The Farmer’s Daughters – named after a real adult film from 1976. The crew neglects to warn Howard and Pearl, the puritanical owners of the farm. In true genre fashion, the bodies soon pile up. Only Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) survives the carnage. Premiering in 2022 at South by Southwest (SXSW), X is well received there.
Pearl
Antepisode of X written with the collaboration of Mia Goth, Pearl features the owner of the farm met in 1979 who, in 1918, dreams of becoming a movie actress. Like Maxine, Pearl will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. In order to prepare her for the role, Ti West reportedly suggested that Mia Goth take inspiration from Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz (1939) and Bette Davis in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). The result is, to say the least, striking. Presented out of competition in 2022 at the Venice Film Festival, Pearl y garners good reviews.

In 1985, six years after surviving the massacre that wiped out her film crew, the pornstar Texan Maxine Minx (Mia Goth), the daughter of a small-screen preacher, aspires to be the next Jamie Lee Curtis. As the aspiring horror queen lands a role in the sequel to the cult horror film The Puritana mysterious assassin is targeting starlets. But Maxine is ready to do anything to make her dream come true. Shot with cameras from the 1980s, Ti West’s film made headlines in January when an extra chased the actress for kicking her in the head.
