The State is putting EDF to work to contain our electricity bills, plunging the company a little more into a crisis.

EDF is in turmoil. The company was ordered by the State, the majority shareholder, to sell its electricity at a knockdown price to its competitors. The group already has the obligation to do so but will have to increase the volume intended for competition by 20%. For the government, the goal is to avoid a surge in electricity prices on the bill of the French. The price increase will be capped at 4% against more than 44% if EDF had not made this effort.

“EDF is a public company, which must serve the public and respond to a motive of general interest”, declared Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy, on Wednesday 19 January. But for the group, this measure should cost more than 8 billion euros. What push the trade unions to announce a day of mobilization, Wednesday, January 26. Other bad news for EDF, corrosion problems have been detected in some of its plants.
