Scherzer, winner of three career Cy-Young Trophies, underwent a magnetic resonance imaging test Thursday, the day after a shortened six-inning outing against the St. Louis Cardinals due to a “ pinching” felt in the left flank.

The Mets said the test detected “moderate to severe” strain.

The 37-year-old right-hander is 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA in eight starts after signing a three-year, $130 million contract with the Mets. Scherzer, who appeared in eight career All-Star games, struck out 59 and walked 11 in 49 2/3 innings on the mound.

The Mets started Thursday with a six-game cushion at the top of the National League East Division.
