Maumont ponds

“The ponds of Maumont, it is a remarkable natural place” according to Pierre Villot, animator of the Heritage. Today, these ponds are private properties but a public path passable on foot allows you to go around them completely during a pleasant walk.

Maumont ponds, there are three ponds one after the other, located at the south-west end of the commune of Hautefort, on the edge of the communes of Granges d’Ans and Temple Laguyon. They are mainly fed by the springs of L’Hermitage, Sigale and the washhouse fountain of the “Temple”.

The origin of the first pond of Maumont, (the Gaulhas), comes from a priory which existed in the village, and which had its pond for its fish reserve. The wash house in private property, was for the use of the inhabitants of Maumont.

Near this place on the edge of the road, there was a large, roughly round stone, certainly a nodule or “nugget” of iron ore, which was called “the grave of the wandering Jew”. Why this name?
