Monday January 3, on France 2, we discover, in the Hérault, a company that recovers old mattresses, disassembles them, and repackages them to give them a second life. This results in new mattresses, sold three times cheaper than the market price.

A serviced apartment that is going to be renovated gets rid of mattresses, which are between 5 and 8 years old. They could have gone with the dumpster, as is often the case. “It’s such a shame, since they are still very recent and clean for use”, explains Jérémie Adjedj, founder of the Ecomatelas company. The director of the residence never wanted to throw away and always tried to donate her used mattresses, in a united and ecological approach. “We are going to give it a second life”, appreciates Laurette Lapeine, director of the Massane estate in Baillargues (Hérault).

In the workshop, we start by cutting the foam or latex to remove the used layer. Only the soul of the mattress remains. It’s time to recompose the millefeuille of almost like new bedding, from different mattress cores.

Two partners have embarked on the recycling adventure, after 4 years of research. It was necessary to set up the recovery process, but also and above all the disinfection process. On the boutique side, the company is increasingly successful: 80,000 mattresses have been sold in 5 years, at attractive prices. The small start-up of six employees is the first to recondition mattresses, and the market is booming. Its turnover has multiplied by five in 5 years.
