Matthieu Valet, National Rally (RN) candidate in the European elections, is the political guest on 19/20 info, Thursday May 2. He reacts in particular to Emmanuel Macron’s recent comments on the possible sending of French troops to Ukraine.

Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed, in an interview with The Economist, that he did not rule out sending ground troops to Ukraine “if the Russians were to break through the front lines”. A declaration “irresponsible” according to Matthieu Valet, National Rally (RN) candidate in the European elections. “Today, Russia has nuclear weapons, as does France. (…) This escalation of words in no way presages an escalation behind it which could be warlike”he adds, specifying that the RN is “against sending ground troops to Ukraine” but also “against Ukraine’s entry into NATO and the European Union”.

Matthieu Valet rejects “political fiction”

While RN candidate shared his fear that sending French troops to Ukrainian soil would involve “all other NATO countries”the editorialist Gilles Bornstein reminded him that Article 5 of NATO only applies to the defense of a NATO member country. “I think that diplomacy and words must replace weapons and outrageous and warlike remarks”, replies the RN candidate. As for the possibility of the Russians breaking through the front line, Matthieu Valet retorts that he is not “in political fiction”.
