The 31-year-old Gunner went 3-8 with a 3.89 ERA in 15 starts. He pitched 78 2/3 innings with the Detroit Tigers last season before injuries ended his season. He had to retire in September to undergo surgery to repair a flexor tendon.

Boyd was acquired from the Blue Jays by the Tigers in the trade that sent David Price to Toronto in 2015. In 149 career appearances, including 145 starts, he is 37-62 with an ERA of 4.96.

His contract with the Giants provides performance bonuses of up to 2.3 million US if he makes between 12 and 20 starts.
