Mattel creates a Shania Twain Barbie doll

When she was a little girl, Shania Twain made her own dolls, modeled after Barbie.

Her family couldn’t afford to buy her the real doll, Twain said, so she took matters into her own hands.

“I always played with Barbie at my cousin’s or friends’ house, but at home I made my own Barbies,” she says. I played Barbie with my own creations. »

Now things have changed: Mattel has made a Barbie doll after the celebrity.

The country singer, who is gearing up for a Las Vegas residency beginning in May, is one of eight women to receive a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll in their likeness for International Women’s Day, and Twain has I feel like this is a moment that comes full circle.

The dolls she made were an outlet for her creativity: the characters she invented manifested themselves. In a way, she argues, Barbie is the same thing.

“This Barbie is in a way a projection, my own projection of myself,” she says. This character on stage is a whole game. The costumes, the hairstyle, everything, it’s all part of the same play that begins when we are a child. »

The doll mixes the old with the new. The doll’s hair is a pastel pink color, which the singer favors lately, but she wears the outfit from the 1999 music video for Man! I Feel Like a Woman! : a top hat, button-down shirt and tie, black mini skirt, and over-the-knee boots, paired with a floor-length suit jacket that flares at the waist like a ball gown .

Barbie has had an eventful year, including the hit film directed by Greta Gerwig which is up for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor, a nod to Canadian Ryan Gosling. Ken’s singer will also sing the Oscar-nominated song I’m Just Ken during the ceremony on Sunday.

But it’s also Barbie’s birthday. The doll is celebrating its 65th birthday, while the anniversary of its creation is March 9.

Other women who will receive their own Barbie this year include actresses Viola Davis and Helen Mirren, as well as singer Kylie Minogue.
