Mathieu Dufour has quite a success up his sleeve. The comedian’s show captured at the Bell Center will be broadcast on Netflix from December 22, a first original comedy production from Quebec on the platform.
“Every time I take the time to think about it, I find it really surreal,” says Mathieu Dufour on the line. Although he knew last July that his show was filmed by Netflix, the comedian does not yet realize that the content will soon be available to all subscribers of the most popular streaming platform.
In fact, he admits later jokingly, he was still wondering if this moment at the Bell Center “had really existed” before being able to watch the recording. This show on Netflix makes it possible to “mark this evening, so grandiose and unique”.
Among Quebec comedians, only Martin Matte before him had his own Netflix special. And Mathieu Dufour is the first whose content is produced by the platform. “It’s really thanks to Just for Laughs, who proposed the idea to them, he wishes to mention. It’s a nice sign of confidence, it’s very exciting. »
Like in his living room
Those who could not see Mathieu Dufour on stage, those who want to see him again and those who want to discover him will be able to do so in the comfort of their living room, he rejoices.
The 27-year-old comedian’s style includes a lot of improvisation. On the menu of this show: choreographies, characters, guests and eccentric anecdotes.
I never had a traditional way of working, he says. All my shows are different and I don’t do a lot of them because I like quality more than quantity.

On stage, he lets himself go in the present moment rather than “repeating the same thing for 300 dates”. For this filmed show, he did not want to deviate from his habits. “It would have been a mistake on my part to change my way of doing things by telling myself that it was big and impressive,” he said. Ten minutes before show, we kicked the people from Netflix, who were from Los Angeles, out of my dressing room and we decided what I was going to say on stage. »
Of course, the technical preparation and the staging were much more elaborate, but it was with his “little keywords” chosen just before the show that he presented himself in front of more than 13,000 people who were waiting at the Bell Centre. “I left myself a great freedom so that it was in my image. »
The bet paid off, it seems. “The most touching comment I have received, and I have received it several times after the showis that even people in the pity really high and really far felt like they were in their living room. They were comfortable, relaxed. The magic worked. »
always different
This show will therefore be unique, like all performances by the comedian from Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. But this time, archives remain thanks to this recording. The comedian says he is happy “to have material available somewhere”, even if he admits to being a badly shod shoemaker, he who does not consume humor at all on screen (nor in theaters Besides).
Be that as it may, while he describes this “cursed beautiful evening” as one of the most emotional moments of his young career, Mathieu Dufour is obviously proud to be able to present the show to even more people, through from Netflix.
It will also be possible to see it on our screens from January when the show is broadcast on Amazon Prime. LOL: Who will have the last laugh?, in which he participated with several other comedians. He also announced a tour of outdoor amphitheaters in Quebec during the summer of 2023.
For the rest, Mathieu Dufour improvises in life as in his performances. “There’s nothing I like more than having nothing planned, following my instincts and embarking on projects,” he says. The most beautiful surprises of my life, I had not planned them in advance. I will continue to surf on it and have fun. »
