Germany: massive mobilization against the far right
Germany: massive mobilization against the far right – (franceinfo)
In Germany, a crisis situation is pushing the AfD up in the polls. Faced with this rise of the far-right party, which wishes to carry out a mass expulsion of people of foreign origin, the Germans are mobilizing.
Frankfurt, the financial heart of Germany, was the stronghold of demonstrations against the far-right on Saturday January 20. No fewer than 35,000 people responded to the call from political parties, religious leaders and even coaches from the German football championship. A protester expresses her fear of the rise of the far right: “I am disgusted to see that even today we are forced to demonstrate against the far right.”
The chancellor supports the movement
Faced with these mobilizations, Olaf Scholz, Federal Chancellor of Germany, was keen to provide his support: “I find these gatherings fair and good. If one thing should never again have a place in Germany, it is the racial ideology of the National Socialists.” The origin of these demonstrations was the revelation last November of the holding of a secret meeting in which members of the AfD participated. A plan for a mass expulsion of foreigners from Germany was at the heart of the discussions.
