Everything indicates that the manager of Schemengees Bar & Grille, Joseph Walker, was killed in his establishment on Wednesday evening. At least that’s what his father, Leroy Walker, a member of the city council of Auburn, a neighboring town of Lewiston, reported. The father of the deceased also deplored that the police took “up to 14 hours” to inform him and his family of the death of his son. The Schemengees restaurant-bar is one of two places that were targeted by a shooting. “He was a great boss, the generous and fatherly type,” an employee of the establishment, Olivia Guadagno, recalled online, adding that “learning to live in our community again is going to be a process.”

According to some accounts, he died “a hero” while trying to neutralize the attacker. On Facebook, Mr. Conrad’s aunt, Holly Mireault, expressed concern on Wednesday evening about not having heard from him. “My nephew loved his daughter more than words can say. We love you and we will miss you, Tommy. We will all help take care of Caroline,” she wrote on Thursday.
