Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Comes to a Close
The cinematic landscape has transformed dramatically since Marvel introduced the MCU, prompting various production companies to create their own shared universes. Sony’s journey, however, has been uniquely complicated. Although Spider-Man is a key player in the Marvel universe, Sony acquired the rights to the character long ago. When Spider-Man joined the MCU, a deal allowed Disney and Marvel to produce films featuring Tom Holland as the beloved superhero, but Sony retained the rights to several other characters linked to Spider-Man.
This led to the establishment of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which has seen the release of five films since 2018. Among these are three Venom films, one dedicated to Morbius, and one featuring Madame Web. Over 600 million dollars have been invested in this venture, including the anticipated Kraven The Hunter, set to hit theaters on December 18. Sadly, sources indicate that Kraven will mark the end of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
While Kraven The Hunter is confirmed as the final film, there may still be hope for other projects. With an investment of just over 500 million dollars generating 2.1 billion dollars at the global box office (not including Kraven’s figures), the universe is profitable but has not achieved the monumental success typical of Hollywood blockbusters. The franchise’s strength has largely relied on the Venom films, while Morbius and Madame Web underperformed at the box office. Consequently, Sony’s decision to conclude the universe isn’t surprising, despite some fans enjoying these films.
However, the future isn’t entirely bleak. The Wrap has suggested that while Kraven will be the last film, there’s still potential for a Spider-Noir series featuring Nicolas Cage. This project is inspired by the character’s popularity in the animated film Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse, which is not connected to the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The series is reportedly in production, and it seems unlikely that it would be abruptly halted at this stage. Although The Wrap focuses on the end of the film series, the fate of the Spider-Noir series remains uncertain. Only time will tell if Kraven and Spider-Noir can spark renewed interest in this cinematic universe, but optimism may be in short supply.
