Marvel questions its superheroes with the most “antiheroic” of its characters

The fifth film, plus a series, in which Deadpool appears, here associated with Wolverine, “Deadpool & Wolverine” puts into equation the legitimacy of the Marvel superhero “menagerie” in an irreverent opus.

Appeared in an adventure of News Mutants In 1991, before having his own franchise, Deadpool stood out in the list of Marvel superheroes, as an antihero. Supervillain in the inaugural episode where he appeared, he evolved into his current nature, nicknamed the “Big Mouth Mercenary” for his constant addresses to readers, the trait also being found in cinema.

Apart from in the gallery of paper superheroes, he is also in the films, including this Deadpool & Wolverine released in theaters on Wednesday July 24, which goes so far as to question the sustainability of the genre.

Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, has an exceptional power of regeneration that strengthens his physical abilities, but is refused to join the Avengers he requested. When the Tribunal of Anachronistic Variations offers him a mission worthy of him, he is faced with the possibility of seeing the disappearance of all his loved ones if he accepts it. Refusing to take on such a mission, he turns to Wolverine, another violent and irascible superhero, to help him keep those around him alive.

Deadpool stands out in more ways than one within the great family of superheroes, by his marginal character, rejected by his peers, a down-and-out among his own kind. This difference is not the least of his qualities as an atypical character, and his relationship with Wolverine will not go without saying, which fuels the escapades that the two superheroes will go through, not always in agreement on how to act.

This difference gives Marvel the opportunity to question its own editorial line, going so far as to question itself in relation to its favorite subject. The publisher, which has become a major Hollywood studio, questions its own legitimacy, through a precisely “existentialist” character. But make no mistake, Deadpool & Wolverine does not deviate from its nature as an action film. It is, however, intelligently tinged with a reflection on a genre that Marvel seems to admit to having gone around.

The very form of the film questions the genre, not hesitating from the first scene to visualize gory images which will be scattered throughout the film, granting it a ban for under 12s. Deadpool & Wolverine breaks with the line of superhero films, inviting this unexpected questioning from a studio that made its fortune from it. Are superheroes eternal?
