A completely crazy victory. Despite being outnumbered the entire match, Marseille overturned the “Olympico” against OL (2-3) on Sunday, September 22. The game was off to a bad start. Reduced to 10 after Leonardo Balerdi’s second yellow card in the 5th minute, OM, dispossessed of the ball, had to defend almost the entire match and proceed on the counterattack. At home, Lyon struggled to open the scoring despite numerous chances from their attackers, including Gift Orban. Even Alexandre Lacazette missed his penalty (45th + 7), stopped by a well-inspired Geronimo Rulli throughout the match.
Everything accelerated in the second half. Lyon started the second half better with a goal from Duje Caleta-Car (53rd) on an excellent pass from Clinton Mata. The joy was short-lived, as Marseille were sharp on the counter. Pol Lirola, used to playing in defense, perfectly chipped his ball to equalize (69th), before Ulisses Garcia put the visitors ahead on the scoreboard (82nd). Trailing, Lyon clearly lacked realism in front of goal. In added time, Rayan Cherki exulted after equalizing (90th + 3), thinking he would give his team a draw. But that was without taking into account Marseille’s self-sacrifice and Jonathan Rowe’s technique. The English winger slipped between two Lyon defenders before curling his shot and scoring Marseille’s third goal in the 90th + 5.
With this unexpected victory, Roberto De Zerbi’s players continue their very good start to the championship. The Marseillais move up to second place, tied on points with PSG, first, and Monaco, third. For the Lyonnais, it’s a cold shower. They missed a great opportunity to return to the top half of the table and are in 14th place in Ligue 1 after five games.
Relive the match.
