Markets fall in Europe after gains in Asia, Wall Street takes leave

(Hong Kong) European markets opened lower on Monday, while Asian markets were mostly higher.


US markets will be closed for Martin Luther King Day, a public holiday.

The French CAC 40 and the German DAX both slipped 0.1%. For its part, the British FTSE 100 lost 0.2%.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was unchanged and the broader S&P 500 index gained 0.1%.

In Asian markets, Hong Kong lost 0.2%, while Shanghai rose 0.2%.

In Japan, the Tokyo Nikkei 225 ended the day up 0.9%. South Korea’s Kospi remained relatively stable.

Ultimately, the Australian S&P/ASX 200 index remained virtually unchanged.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, the price of oil lost 33 cents, to settle at US$72.35 per barrel.
