Mark Scheifele scores twice as Jets beat Rangers 4-1

(Winnipeg) Mark Scheifele scored twice and helped the Winnipeg Jets start their season on the right foot with a 4-1 win over the New York Rangers on Friday.

Scheifele scored a goal in the first period and then scored a power play goal in the third period.

New Jets forward Sam Gagner, who signed with the Manitoba club Sept. 2, scored the game-winning goal in the third period.

Kyle Connor also scored in an empty net while Nikolaj Ehlers had two assists.

The game was supposed to mark the debut of new Jets (1-0-0) head coach Rick Bowness, but the team announced earlier today that the 67-year-old had tested positive for COVID. -19. Assistant coach Scott Arneil managed the club.

Dryden Hunt tied the score at 1-1 early in the third period for Rangers (2-1-0), who were playing their second game in two nights.

Connor Hellebuyck made 40 saves for the Jets.

Jaroslav Halak stopped 30 shots for Rangers.
