There are many wrecks in the waters bordering France. Some people indulge in burglaries of these boats that have previously sunk. However, these thieves risk heavy penalties of up to several years in prison.

It’s a whole new type of burglary, shipwrecks are looted by thieves. In the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, an underwater archaeological site has been the subject of a new type of burglary. “They are seasoned divers from the region, they had recognized this wreck”, indicates Major of the Maritime Gendarmerie Hervé Wallerick. The thieves have this time been found with their loot. According to experts, the trafficking of archaeological pieces is in vogue.

This new type of theft is not only reserved for seasoned professionals since amateurs are also trying to find a nest egg. Moreover, it is not only the Mediterranean Sea which is concerned by this problem, because less famous, known or frequented rivers are also the object of burglars. On the Charente river, a wreck, holding pieces dating from the Greco-Roman period, was also stolen. The person necessarily knew the place and had equipment. A looter admits to doing this looting for fun. “It’s like when you go to the mushrooms”says the man.
