Maritime transport accounts for 90% of world trade in goods. This is a real ecological issue, because the 50,000 ships that sail the seas are responsible for 3% of greenhouse gas emissions. Carriers are trying to make progress by experimenting with green technologies.

For the first time, the port of Fos-sur-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhone) will accommodate the full of a freighter at the LNGliquefied natural gas. “We know that we are a pioneer somewhere, we know that we are moving towards something (…) and also making history in the maritime sector”rejoices Farid Trad, Director of Energy Transition at CMA-CGM. the LNG can only be transferred at a temperature of -161°. For a freighter, this represents 6,000 m3 of liquefied gas. The filling operation lasts 15 hours. This calls for the perfect stability of the two ships.

the LNG emits 20% less carbon monoxide. The CMA-CGM group has thus set itself the objective of making it its fuel of choice. “We will have 44 at the end of 2024 and the idea, each time there are new constructions, obviously priority will be given to the LNG solution”says Farid Trad. This ecological shift is encouraged by major global retail groups such as IKEA, Amazon and Michelin.
