While many American stars have walked the red carpet in recent days, it is the turn of the team of one of the most anticipated French films in official competition to enter the scene. Marion Cotillard, Melvil Poupaud, Patrick Timsit, the main protagonists of Brother and sister, by Arnaud Desplechin, will climb the steps of the Palais des Festivals on Friday 20 May. The director is a regular on the Croisette, as is his main actress, for whom this is the thirteenth participation in the Cannes festival. Hate and forgiveness. In his new film, Arnaud Desplechin listens to the siblings and the hostility that opposes a sister to his brother. The director thus reconnects with the vein of kings and queen (2004) and A Christmas tale (2008) and continues his exploration of the family. Secrets, lies, betrayals and other deep wounds are the ingredients of Brother and sister.
Reunions. It was in 1996 that Marion Cotillard and Arnaud Desplechin first worked together. The actress, 21 years old at the time, had a very small role in How I argued…. (my sex life) which was presented at Cannes in competition. But their real collaboration dates from 2017 with The Ghosts of Ishmael, presented out of competition. As for Melvil Poupaud, he was already playing in A Christmas tale in 2008.
A single film from the African continent. The other film presented in official competition on Friday, Boy from Heaven, is directed by the Swede of Egyptian origin Tarik Saleh. His film, in which it is a question of theology and rivalries, is located in Egypt. Noticed in 2017 with his second feature film Confidential CairoTarik Saleh is for the first time in the race for the Palme d’Or.
