Marine Tondelier, national secretary of Ecologists, on franceinfo Tuesday May 14 denounces “a humiliation” of “the colonial state” in New Caledonia, while the urban area of Nouméa has been in the grip of serious tensions since Monday evening.
Violence occurred while a sensitive constitutional revision relating to the expansion of the electoral body specific to the provincial vote was being examined in Paris by the National Assembly. She “regret” this “epidemic of violence“, but denounces a “electoral manipulation“, while this “nIt can only be done through local consensus.”
Situation still tense
The situation still remains tense in Nouméa: the High Commission of the Republic in New Caledonia affirms that “serious disturbances to public order are still underway in Nouméa and neighboring towns“.
At La Coulée, near the town of Mont-Dore, occasional confrontations took place at the end of the afternoon between young people and the police. Gendarmes were targeted with projectiles, before responding with tear gas grenades. Since the beginning of the afternoon, residents of the area have no longer had access to tap water due to a deliberately broken pipe. Around a hundred residents are grouped together to make a filter dam at the entrance to the Ouémo peninsula, allowing only the inhabitants of the district of the commune of Nouméa to pass, organizers tell Nouvelle-Calédonie La 1ère.
To prevent further violence, measures have been taken. Gatherings on public roads and in public places are prohibited in Nouméa, Dumbéa, Le Mont-Dore and Païta until Thursday 4 p.m. (local time). A curfew is also decreed for next night, from Tuesday 6 p.m. to Wednesday 6 a.m. in these same municipalities.
