Marie Vastel appointed columnist at “Devoir”

We are very proud to announce the appointment of parliamentary correspondent Marie Vastel as editorial writer for the Duty. Her vast career in political coverage and her experience as a political analyst naturally predestined her to this function of opinion, which is still essential in our daily news.

Marie Vastel has been a parliamentary correspondent in Ottawa for 14 years, 12 of them for the Duty. Previously, she had worked for The Canadian Press. In addition to following the parliamentary soap opera in Ottawa, the journalist covered three federal elections, followed the wanderings of two prime ministers outside Canada, occupied a pocket office in Washington in the midst of the presidential election and made press trips to Afghanistan and Japan. .

For the past two years, to our delight and that of readers, Marie Vastel has written analyzes on our platforms, a genre that naturally prepared her for the jump to editorial. Marie collaborates on a regular basis as a news commentator with the French and English networks of CBC/Radio-Canada.

“We are very happy to welcome Marie Vastel to the editorial team, a team which thereby achieves gender parity,” said the director of the Duty, Brian Myles. Marie has a long experience of politics, a remarkable capacity for analysis and a tact allowing her to exercise a critical sense while respecting people and institutions. She will shed valuable light on federal politics, her primary area of expertise, but she will also cover Quebec politics and other topics of interest. Our readers will be well served by Marie’s rigor and expertise. »

Member of the editorial team, our colleague Robert Dutrisac will bow out of Duty at the end of June, after more than 35 years of very loyal and rich service. Hired in the economy section in 1987, Robert became a parliamentary correspondent in Quebec in 1999 and joined the editorial team in 2017. We owe him a detailed historical and analytical look at the parliamentary soap opera and opinion pieces that made an impression on the French language, immigration and the distinct character of Quebec, among other things.

Good luck to both of you for the future!

Marie-Andrée Chouinard,
Editor in Chief
