Independent MNA for Maurice-Richard in the Montreal region Marie Montpetit announced Tuesday that she will not seek a new mandate in the elections next October.
“After more than eight years of intense political commitment, I am leaving life in the National Assembly, but very proud of the work I have accomplished,” said Ms. Montpetit during a press conference. She was first elected in 2014 and served as Minister of Culture and Communications in the government of Philippe Couillard. She was re-elected in 2018.
Last November, the member was excluded from the Liberal caucus due to allegations of psychological harassment. Marie Montpetit reiterated that no official complaint of harassment has been made against her.
Regarding her exclusion from the Liberal caucus by leader Dominique Anglade, the MP said she was “disappointed with the way things were done”. “The least you could do in a situation like that would have been to [la part de Mme Anglade] or on behalf of his team to contact me”.
The elected official announced that she would not vote for the Liberal Party in the next election, due to “circumstances”.
Ms. Montpetit, however, said to leave in a “very serene way”. She said she is not closing the door on returning to politics one day. “But for the moment, I need to go do something else,” said the chosen one.
