Behind the untouchable Gregorio Paltrinieri and his Italian compatriot Domenico Acerenza, the Frenchman Marc-Antoine Olivier finished in third place in the 5 km in open water on Saturday.

Unsurprisingly, Gregorio Paltrinieri retained his European title in the 5 km open water swim, this Saturday August 20, during the 2022 European Swimming Championships in Rome (Italy). At the end of a Franco-Italian battle, the reigning 10 km world champion did not break down and won ahead of his compatriot Domenico Acerenza in 52’13”05. Frenchman Marc-Antoine Olivier won the bronze medal (+7”3) by beating the second Habs in this race, Logan Fontaine (+7”8).

First announced 4th in the 5 km in open water at the European Swimming Championships in Rome behind his compatriot Logan Fontaine, Marc-Antoine Olivier finally won the bronze medal. The Frenchman explained that he had touched the final wall very little, justifying the first error of the judges in the examination of the photo-finish.

During these 5 km, Logan Fontaine and Marc-Antoine Olivier managed to maintain a good pace to compete with the two transalpine leaders but finally stalled in the final sprint. The two Tricolores then faced each other to take the bronze medal. It was Logan Fontaine who was first named third. But after a long discussion and analysis of the photo-finish, it was finally the 2017 5 km world champion who took third place ahead of his compatriot.
