Tavares played 17 minutes and 14 seconds in a preseason game Saturday against the Senators.
Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said the injury dates back to that game.
Tavares scored 27 goals and 76 points last season, in 79 games.
He added three goals and six points in the first round, where the Maple Leafs were beaten in seven games by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Maple Leafs will play their next exhibition game Wednesday at home against the Montreal Canadiens.
The club will begin the regular season on October 12 in Montreal.
