Emmanuel Macron unveiled Monday October 2 the establishment of 239 new gendarmerie brigades in rural and peri-urban areas. The President of the Republic presented this establishment during a trip to Tonneins (Lot-et-Garonne), where he inaugurated a gendarmerie barracks. Emmanuel Macron announced the creation of these new brigades in January 2022, during a speech devoted to internal security in Nice (Côte-d’Azur). For several months, the Élysée and the Ministry of the Interior have been working with mayors and parliamentarians to establish the distribution of these brigades in rural areas.

In addition to the creations which appear on the map above, other brigades are created overseas, in Saint-Martin (a mobile brigade in Sandy-Ground), in New Caledonia (three new brigades including one fixed in Kaala -Gomen and two mobiles in Poya and Moindou) and in French Polynesia (two new mobile brigades in Moorea-Maiao and Papeete).

There will be “between one and four brigades” moreover “in each department, including overseas”, had already clarified the Elysée on Friday. It will be about “mobile brigades with six gendarmes” (who will travel by truck between the different municipalities) or “fixed brigades, ‘hard’, with around ten gendarmes” which will be added to the 3,049 existing brigades. “This concerns quite a few peri-urban areas which have lost brigades, and also in rural areas,” added the presidency, promising “the first creations of mobile and fixed brigades” from “November 2023”. In total, 2,144 gendarmes will be recruited.
