On May 5, 1992, the collapse of a temporary stand in the Furiani stadium in Bastia led to the death of 19 people and injured more than 2,000. 30 years later, the shock and the emotion are still there. Several tribute ceremonies are planned.
Many ceremonies were organized on Tuesday May 3 and Wednesday May 4, in Bastia (Haute-Corse), in celebration of the sad anniversary of the Furiani disaster. “This afternoon, no change to the usual protocol. As every year, the victims, relatives, politicians will meet at the stele, a moment of meditation, laying of wreaths”reports journalist Pascale Paumier, in duplex from Bastia.
No representatives of national bodies or football have been announced. “On the other hand, the Minister of Sports, Roxana Maracineanu, who has worked hard for the sanctification of this date of May 5, was invited by the collective, she had to decline the invitation due to a cabinet reshuffle”, explains the journalist. However, she sent “a personal message” to the president of the collective of victims.
