On the morning of Tuesday, March 8, Russia pledged to respect ceasefires in several cities in Ukraine, in order to allow the evacuation of civilians. However, vigilance is still required.

They would like to flee, but do not dare. In Mariupol (Ukraine), a city surrounded by Russian forces, the population feels abandoned. “We have no more electricity, we have no more food, we have no more medicine, we have nothing more”, cries a woman. Ukrainian police discourage them from using the humanitarian corridor set up by Russia.

In Mariupol and four other cities, Russia established local ceasefires on Tuesday, March 8, and opened humanitarian corridors. The Ukrainian government accuses them of not respecting their commitment, and of maintaining the bombardments. Further north, food reached the city, and dozens of civilians were evacuated by bus. In Irpin (Ukraine), thousands of Ukrainians tried to flee during the truce. According to specialists, the announcements of humanitarian corridors are a military tactic, already used by Russia in Chechnya, then in Syria.
