Thursday May 23, François Bayrou, Nicolas Sarkozy and Brigitte Macron went to Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) to pay a final tribute to Jean-Claude Gaudin, former mayor of the city, who died at the age of 84 .

He led Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) for a quarter of a century. Thursday, May 23, the city paid tribute to him. Jean-Claude Gaudin, who died at the age of 84, was a senator, minister, but above all mayor of the Marseille city from 1995 to 2020. A procession left from his house to the town hall, before reaching the cathedral of La Major for a funeral open to the public. “Jean-Claude Gaudin was not only the voice and face of Marseille, he was a figure of French democracy”according to François Bayrou, who came for the ceremony.

No crowd in front of the building but some 200 people gathered in the cathedral for mass. Emmanuel Macron, absent due to his trip to New Caledonia, still wanted to salute the memory of Jean-Claude Gaudin with a text read by his chief of staff. A shower of tributes attended by many political figures, such as former President Nicolas Sarkozy, the Prince of Monaco, Albert II, and Brigitte Macron.
