Manitoba: four bodies found near the Canada-US border

The bodies of four individuals, including that of a baby, were discovered dead on Wednesday after they crossed the Canada-US border near Emerson, Manitoba.

This was reported Thursday by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), stating that it was the bodies of a man, a woman, a baby and that of a teenager.

Canadian authorities had received information shortly before 9:30 a.m. from their counterparts at US Customs and Border Protection, after they apprehended a group of individuals at the border.

“One of these people was carrying items for a baby. However, there was no baby in the group,” the RCMP said in a statement.

After launching the search, the first three bodies were discovered around 1:30 p.m. nearly 10 kilometers east of Emerson by RCMP officers on patrol. The teenager was found shortly after.

“All the victims were found approximately 12 meters from the Canada-US border,” it was mentioned.

According to initial findings, the four people died of hypothermia. “We are working to identify the victims and autopsies will take place to establish the exact causes of death,” said the RCMP.

The search continued into the evening of Wednesday to check if survivors or other victims were nearby. No other victim has been found so far.

An investigation is underway at the RCMP in conjunction with US Customs and Border Protection and the US Department of Homeland Security.
