It’s a small revolution that calls for others. The Manchester City club announced on Tuesday, October 25, that the shorts of its women’s team will no longer be white from next season. The decision stems from a point by players of the discomfort of playing white during menstruation, which lies in the fear that a leak will automatically be revealed.
“Due to comments made by players, we have decided to change the outfits available to our players. We want to support [les joueuses] and create the best possible environment so that they feel comfortable and can evolve at their best level” wrote City and its equipment supplier Puma, in a joint press release, consulted by AFP. The decision will take effect from the 2023-2024 season.
The subject was notably raised by England striker Beth Mead during Euro 2022, criticizing the “Lionesses” outfits. She explained in early July that the issue had been raised with representatives of Nike, the supplier of the national team’s outfits. “I hope they will change that, she insisted. It’s very nice to have an all-white outfit, but sometimes it’s not practical when it’s that time of the month.”
“Indeed, it is not obvious”, had abounded the defender and captain of the Blue, Wendie Renard, a few days later, in a press conference. “We adapt, we are top players and unfortunately we have that. It’s part of our life. But it’s true that it’s a good thing, I congratulate the English for that (… ) If they can do the same for us, that would be cool.”
Before City, West Bromwich and Stoke City, third division residents in England, had already announced that they would make this provision earlier in the season, after consultation with their players.
