(New York) Buck Showalter let it be known Sunday that he will not return for a third season as manager of the New York Mets.
Aged 67, Showalter made the announcement before the duel against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets started the day with a 74-86 record and 29 and a half games behind the Atlanta Braves, champions of the National Division East.
Showalter became manager of the Mets ahead of the 2022 season and guided the New York team to a 101-61 record last campaign. He received the title of manager of the year in the National.
The Mets are expected to hire David Stearns as president of baseball operations, a senior position above general manager Billy Eppler in the hierarchy, and Showalter’s departure clears the way for Stearns to choose his manager.
